Founding Partner President/CEO

John founded the construction company Nichols Construction Team in 1983 with his father Jim and his brother Brad. John has more than 40 years of construction experience. As president and CEO, John oversees all business operations as well as the overall construction management process ensuring that day-to-day operations meet or exceed the expectations of their clients. John manages all pre-construction services (budgets, estimates, value engineering), evaluates the client’s needs, develops project delivery strategies and obtains all necessary approvals. Leveraging his depth of experience and network, John helps clients find and acquire public incentive funding, as well as all available energy and utility grants and abatements. John takes great pride in helping clients see their dreams become realities and always strives to develop business relationships that are based on respect, trust, and honesty.

Clay joined the Team in 1998. He earned his B.S. in Accounting from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and is an expert in construction cost accounting. We approach all projects on an “open book” basis with clients. This has led Clay to develop project cost accounting records that are clear, concise and easily understood. Clay works closely with our Project Managers to ensure that all projects stay financially “on track.” Clay is highly regarded by all of our strategic financial and insurance partners as a “best-in-class” construction accounting and reporting professional.

Ric Carley

Partner Chief Operations Officer, Team Safety Officer

Ric joined the Team in 1991 and leads all aspects of our operational efforts in support of project success. Ric manages our personnel and equipment resources to ensure that everything required to get the job done, is in the right place at the right time. For Ric, Project Success equals Customer Satisfaction. Ric also serves as Project Manager on many construction projects – most recently Monroe Transportation and Penkse – and serves as relationship manager to many of our clients. In addition, Ric has proudly served our Country for 34 years in the Air Force and Air National Guard, achieving the rank of Chief Master Sergeant in 2000.

Partner VP Project Management

Jim joined the Team in 1997. Jim has had a prolific 25+ year career in the construction industry highlighted by a progressive path of leadership and accountability, culminating in the promotion to VP of Project Management / Senior Project Manager for Nichols Construction Team. Jim’s portfolio includes Rochester Precision Optics, Trinity Montessori School, WXXI and all Harley School projects. Jim’s rock-solid understanding of design-build methodology and his ability to provide sound management decisions assures a smooth process, in the often turbulent atmosphere of construction projects.

Bert Lieberman

Project Manager

Bert joined the Team in 1995. Bert’s core area of expertise is in interior renovations. Bert has a keen eye for helping to bring a client’s concept to life. Bert ensures that clients are not inconvenienced by our presence while we are performing the renovation. Bert has managed multiple projects at Unity Health and RIT, and recently managed construction of the build-out for Home Choice Partners, a sterile environment, out-patient chemotherapy treatment center.

Mark Chester

Mark Chester

Chief Estimator

Mark is the newest member of the Team and joined us in April 2013. As Chief Estimator, his responsibilities include assisting in the coordination of all preconstruction and estimating services for commercial construction projects, ensuring the cost-effectiveness and timely completion of each project. Mark has over 16-years of experience in construction project estimating and management. He has experience serving: hospitality, office, retail, medical, education, industrial, and multi-family residential markets. In addition, Mark serves on the Board of Directors of the Rochester Junior Builders Exchange and the University of Rochester Mary Parks Asthma Center Golf Committee.

Senior Estimator (Emeritus)

Imported from Ireland, Pat joined our construction company at inception in 1983. Pat is a 50-year veteran in the construction industry; he pulls from his depth of experience to the benefit of our clients. In an age where trying to be the “low bidder” tempts many to take shortcuts, Pat will not let an estimate leave his desk until he is certain that it contains all the labor and material necessary to perform the job as specified. Craftsmanship is Pat’s way of life. Having been indentured with a master carpenter, Pat took on a young apprentice for 37+ years. That apprentice was John Nichols and the two worked together for nearly 40 years.

Project Superintendent

Ray joined the Team in 1990. He has earned an industry-wide reputation for his depth of construction knowledge, fairness and fortitude in the pursuit of meeting all project objectives. Ray is the on-site field superintendent who makes certain that everything happens according to plan. Ray’s area of expertise is in the industrial and transportation markets. His most recent projects include Rochester Precision Optics, Brinkman Precision and Penske Truck Leasing.

Chip Ayres

Project Superintendent

Chip joined our construction company in 1995, bringing tremendous trade artistry to the team. A hands-on superintendent, Chip possesses specialized expertise in the areas of sitework, foundations, and specialty concrete work. Whenever one of our clients requires a concrete pad built to precise specifications, Chip always leads the effort. He also leads our site-cast Concrete Tilt-up crew. Recently, Chip supervised construction of the 58,000 square foot addition to Lake Country Apple Storage Cooperative in Wolcott and is currently supervising construction of the 48,000 square foot addition to Reflexite Precision Technology Center.

Jerry Lanse

Jerry Lanse

Project Superintendent

Jerry joined the Team in 2000. Jerry leads many of our projects serving human service organizations. Jerry has supervised projects for Seneca-Cayuga ARC, Lifetime Assistance, and the Mary Cariola Children’s Center, most recently supervising the addition to Monroe School Transportation. He also had a vital leadership role in construction of the Class I Clean Room at Rochester Precision Optics. The phrase “we are sad to see you leave” is not often heard at the conclusion of an interior renovation project, but it’s a common remark from Jerry’s clients.

Adam joined the Team in 2005. Adam is our newest supervisory team member, having been with us for only seven years! Adam led our construction efforts at the Seneca Park Zoo Elephant Exhibit, Jefferson Veterinary Hospital and most recently Trinity Montessori School. Like all Nichols Construction Team Superintendents, Adam is passionate about project success and fully committed to our Team-based culture.

David Wickman

David Wickman

Sitework Superintendent

David joined construction company in 1991 and supervises all aspects of project site improvements. Grading, paving, and utility installations are David’s core focus. He is a master of project site management and logistics. Construction projects are extremely active places, with people and equipment moving about continuously.  David coordinates site protocols and traffic flows, facilitating smooth operations and a safer jobsite. David is a master equipment operator, highly skilled on any size backhoe, dozer and excavator.

Dan Sheldon

Dan Sheldon

Project Superintendent

Dan joined the Team in 2005 as an interior renovation specialist. One of his greatest strengths is his ability to complete the job with minimal disruption to the clients operations. Dan educates himself in the protocols of the project environment and integrates his work seamlessly into that project environment – even if it means working “off” hours. Dan has worked extensively in the Unity Health System and at RIT.

Director of Administration

Jennie joined the Team in 2009. All that our Team strives for in customer service is personified in Jennie. She is our “ambassador of first impressions” and is truly an indispensable member of the project team. She works closely with the project managers to ensure that all areas of project administration are accomplished. Jennie also supports Clay Carpenter (our CFO) with cost accounting, payables, receivables and payroll. Jennie’s delightful personality exudes in everything she touches and is felt in all aspects of our operations and administration.
