Collaboration is Key
Rochester’s PBS affiliate, WXXI, chose to lead the local market in the federally mandated conversion to digital broadcasting by completely renovating their facility in an accelerated timeframe while remaining fiscally responsible to publically donated funds.
They undertook an exhaustive, qualifications-based search for a top design/build firm and repeatedly selected TNT across all five phases of the project.
What made this so enjoyable was collaborating with the highly engaged WXXI team and overcoming a number of challenges including finding ingenious ways to:
- Broadcast 24/7 while renovating the master control room, studios, engineering, sound stage, prep and green rooms, reception and offices.
- Process management and contingency planning were critical!
- Enable the DJs to have external views without negatively impacting sound quality.
- We designed the space with acoustics in mind and sourced highly customized windows to suppress exterior noise.
- Install new HVAC equipment to increase the cooling capacity of the extensive broadcasting equipment.
TNT coordinated with the HVAC manufacturer to construct the system to meet detailed cooling and space requirements then carefully lowered the equipment through a roof-to-basement shaft with only a 0.5” clearance.
- Remove demolition materials from the building
It was a joy to work with such a great team and bring WXXI into the digital age.
